Little Known Squirrel Facts

Those nervous and jerky little pest that occupy the tree tops of your yard and bury acorns in your garden and flower bed have some logic behind a lot of their seemingly random behaviors. Squirrels are as fascinating as they are cute, as annoying as they are quick, and more dangerous than people think.

Here are more unusual things about squirrels.

1. Some make their own jerky. Red squirrels hang the fungi up to dry on tree branches. It keeps better this way than it would buried in the ground.

2. Those fluffy tails help them maintain balance while scurrying along tree branches. Their tail also functions as a parachute when they are leaping from tree to tree (or tree to the roof of your house).

3. They use their tail to communicate with one another and to signal danger.

4. The males are called bucks. The females are called does. The baby squirrels are called kittens.

5. Their teeth continue growing throughout their life and they chew constantly to keep them trimmed back and sharp. This includes chewing electrical wires inside homes, resulting in hundreds of house fires every year.

If you have squirrels in your yard, they are trying to get inside your home. Heritage Pest Control can prevent them from getting in your Bergen County home and save you thousands of dollars in damages. Contact us today.
